Celebrating it's 35th year of operation, the Derry/Londonderry Ulster Project, over 2880 teens and leaders have benefitted many young people from across the city.
This has been possible through the dedication of a huge number of volunteers - both serving as leaders and as Board Members. In 2018 in the New Years Honours List Malcolm Hewitt was awarded the MBE for services to community for his work with Ulster Project. In 2024 in the Kings Birthday Honours List Irene Hewitt was awarded a BEM for services to the community and the Ulster Project Derry/Londonderry group were awarded the Kings Award for Voluntary Services – this is the equivalent of an MBE and is testimony to our board members and all the volunteers who have gave of their time over the last 35 years.
The Derry/Londonderry Ulster Project currently has two American centres. Each year sending groups to Greenville, North Carolina and the communities of Oak Ridge and Knoxville, in East Tennessee.
We involve the whole family in many of our events, whether it be fundraising events, social events or team building events, which not only help the teens mix but opens the ethos of the Ulster Project to the wider family circle.
To ensure that no teen is excluded because of cost
we hold group fundraising events (one per calendar month) which include:
Bag Packing / Sponsored Walk / Table Quiz which has become so popular with over 45 teams of 5 people and of course School Cake Sales / Church Collections
Before travelling to the United States, teens prepare by participating in Time of Discovery sessions, topics covered during these sessions include: The Name of our City; Flags & Emblems. The themes of these sessions is continued and built upon in America throughout the month of July.
The city's Cathedrals host the annual Ulster Project Closing Ceremony in alternating years.
